JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the Clemson University maintains compliance with state and federal requirements that apply to research and teaching applications of radioactive materials (RAM), radiation-producing devices, lasers and sources of non-ionizing radiation.
Operating with minimal supervision, the ARSO leads complex projects and serves as a technical expert across multiple functional areas. This role requires extensive collaboration with principal investigators, research staff, students, support teams to review research protocols, identify potential compliance risks, and provide expert guidance to maintain a safe and compliant research environment.
Assists the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in development, implementation and administration of the Radiation Safety and Laser Safety Programs at Clemson University, and Clemson facilities statewide.
ARSO must be capable of performing RSO duties and must be qualified to be named as RSO on the Clemson University RAM License in the event of the RSO's prolonged absence.

JOB DUTIES:

20% - Essential - Radiation Safety Program Implementation:
Under minimal supervision and in collaboration with the RSO develops, implements, and reviews formal procedures for all aspects of the Radiation Safety Program, including emergency response, area and personnel decontamination, personnel monitoring, bioassay, radiation and contamination surveys, transfer of radioactive material, instrument calibration, shipping and receipt of radioactive materials, use of engineering and workplace controls, and personnel protective equipment. Performs classroom training and assists in the development and review of training materials for radioactive-material users and users of equipment capable of producing ionizing radiation. Participates in Radiation Safety Database development and maintenance. Supervises staff and students working in Radiation Safety.

40% - Essential - X-ray and Non-ionizing Radiation Safety:
Serves as a primary contact in x-ray, laser and non-ionizing radiation safety. Serves as a Laser Safety Officer. In collaboration with the RSO develops and implements laser and non-ionizing radiation safety programs and procedures, provides x-ray and laser safety training and periodic inspections. Assists laser users in performing laser hazard evaluation, proper use of engineering safety controls and PPE selection.

20% - Essential - Radioactive Waste Disposal and Equipment Maintenance
Formulates and updates procedures and assists with programs oversight for the collection and processing of all radioactive waste for storage, decay, and shipment to an approved off-site waste repository. Directs and assists in the ordering, receipt, and inventory tracking of all radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
Assists Hazardous Waste Management group in collection, management and disposal of hazardous and bio-hazardous waste on as-needed basis.
Performs and supervises routine maintenance, calibration, operational checks and repair of the radiation detection and measurement equipment. Evaluates needs and submits requests for additional equipment, supplies and tools.

10% - Essential - Inspecting and Compliance:
Conducts inspections of laboratories where radioactive materials are used. Evaluates Federal and State regulatory compliance in the laboratory related to the possession, use, and disposal of radioactive materials.

10% - Essential - Other Duties as Assigned:
At the RSO or OES Executive Director request prepares reports, informational notices, letters, requests, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School or Equivalent
Work Exp 1+ years

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - 1st Bachelor's Degree - Health Physics or closely related field
Work Exp 3+ years

Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or eligible for certification

National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT)

Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO)

COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Expected Salary Range: $ 57,700.00 - $ 80,000.00)

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
