Job Description and Duties

The CHP utilizes their own Automotive Technician I certification list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Automotive Technician I classification to be eligible to take the examination. To obtain certification list eligibility, please view the examination bulletin link at  CalCareers and follow all instructions. In addition to applying for the examination, applicants MUST submit an application to this Job Control in order to be considered for the position.

Install a highly technical, complex radio system, Enforcement Vehicle 2020 (EV 20), which includes: four radios, a scanner, a high frequency repeater, an on-board computer, a touch screen monitor, a keyboard and three additional antennas. Modify the vehicle’s original charging system in order to operate the EV 20 system, which includes routing and installing an additional complex wiring harness. Install a complex Emergency Warning Light (EWL) equipment system, which includes installation of a control head, core module and expansion module. Prepare vehicles for installation of Wireless Mobile Video/Audio Recording System (WMVARS), which includes installing the WMVARS' various mounting brackets to mount two cameras and a wireless microphone; modifying the cabin camera mounting bracket; routing, installing, and interfacing the WMVARS wiring harness into the current CHP wiring harness; and connecting the system to an existing power source.

Working Conditions

The Automotive Technician I will work both indoors and outdoors. While indoors, the temperature and humidity are reasonably controlled, and while outdoors, the employee is exposed to climatic conditions.

Is able to lift 60 pounds in weight, be able to work in varying, and sometimes extreme temperatures, and have strong interpersonal/verbal communication skills; and good attendance and punctuality.
