Job Description: 

Under general supervision, the Outreach Victim Advocate provides on scene crisis intervention, advocacy and assistance to victims, witnesses, and survivors of violent and non-violent crimes in the City of Longmont.

Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for initial and follow up contact with victims, victim's family members, and/or witnesses.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to victims in understanding and coping with their situations and contacting parties who may be of assistance to victims, including, but not limited to, friends, family, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers or legal counsel.
  • Reads and interprets police reports. Makes appropriate referrals to community-based resources/services to address any identified needs. Provides emergency support services such as developing a safety plan or addressing immediate safety needs.
  • Act as liaison between victims and witnesses, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, social service agencies, and offices of the courts. Coordinates meetings and may attend with victims to provide necessary support. Provides explanations of victim rights and factual updates of the investigation and criminal proceedings.
  • Assist victims and their families with victim compensation and financial assistance applications, appeals, restitution, or other civil remedies.
  • Maintain statistical data for grant reporting and prepare case reports.
  • Research and compile lists of applicable community resources available to victims. Develop and maintain information packets for victims.
  • Provides training and guidance to volunteer victim advocates on policies, procedures, liability, and safety issues. Assist volunteers with caseloads as needed.
  • As assigned, represent City of Longmont – Public Safety on boards, committees, and task forces related to or pertaining to domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and others.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday work are required as part of this position. Participation in a rotating weekend schedule is expected.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services related field required. 
  • Two years’ experience in victim advocacy preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Working Environment: 

Duties are performed in an office setting within the Police Department, but also include responding to on-scene call outs to provide crisis intervention to crime victims. Requires the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Requires the ability to work cooperatively with crime victims, Police Officers and other Police personnel, citizens, local service providers and non-profits. Requires problem solving, performing detailed work, and handling multiple concurrent tasks. Work will require flexibility including irregular work hours.

There will be frequent walking, sitting, standing, light lifting and carrying up to 15 pounds. Requires ability to safely operate a vehicle when responding to on-scene call outs. Work requires the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
