Job Description

The Peer Recovery Coach delivers non-clinical, evidence-based peer support in the Emergency Department to help patients with high-risk or dependent alcohol and drug use engage in recovery. Working with ED staff, the Coach provides brief interventions, motivational support, referral and linkage to treatment and community services, and appropriate follow-up.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide brief interventions and screen-positive patient support for alcohol/drug use.
  • Assess substance use history, treatment history, readiness to change, motivation, and community needs.
  • Use motivational interviewing and other communication skills to support recovery plans.
  • Coordinate with ED staff and social work to identify and explain community resources.
  • Assist patients and families in accessing services (appointments, transportation).
  • Provide peer support during hospitalization and post-discharge as needed.
  • Offer recovery materials to families and model coping/self-help strategies.
  • Conduct outreach calls to confirm appointments, follow up missed visits, and provide ongoing support.
  • Consult with clinical staff and notify nurses before patient visits.
  • Complete required documentation, attend trainings and meetings, meet productivity standards, and demonstrate competency within 90 days.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Support data collection and quality/process improvement efforts.
  • Manage patient callbacks and reassess needs.
  • Assist with basic ED readiness tasks (cleaning stretchers/monitor cables, stocking carts, retrieving equipment) as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum three years of sustained personal recovery and active engagement in own recovery program.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with healthcare team and community partners.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, use hospital information systems and basic office equipment.
  • Current CPR certification.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to prepare routine reports

Salary Range: Minimum 18.27/hour - Maximum 27.04/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
