Summary

The VA North Texas Health Care System is seeking to fill a Physician (Psychiatrist) position. The staff physiatrist routinely performs inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal and neuromuscular examinations - determines diagnoses - and initiates treatments that emphasize restoration of function. Education Debt Reduction Program is authorized. The 2-page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series. For more information - refer to Required Documents below.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • (1)Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted - OR (2)Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above - facility officials must confirm that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated
  • License: Physicians must possess a current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state - territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • The Physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active - current licensure
  • Residency Training
  • Physicians must have successfully completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs - in an accredited core specialty training program (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leading to eligibility for board certification - OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) leading to eligibility for board certification - OR (3) One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States - OR (4) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Preferred Experience: Board certified or board eligible in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialty
  • Performs initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients and inpatients
  • Formulates diagnosis and determines patients' needs for further diagnostic or therapeutic care and follow-up
  • Documents electronic medical records
  • Communicates with different parties including patients - family members - and other team members
  • Experienced in managing patients with brain injury problems and other neurological problems such as strokes
  • Orders diagnostic tests and consults and initiates therapeutic regimes for those patients
  • Experienced in performing electromyography (EMGs) and nerve conduction studies
  • Performs rehab office procedures such as trigger joint injections - tendon/bursa/joint injections
  • Provides preventive health care screening of outpatients and treatment for spine care patients
  • Provides supervisions to PM&R residents - a physician assistant - and nurses

  • Heavy lifting 45 pounds and over - Heavy carrying 45 pounds and over - Straight pulling for 1 hour - Pulling hand over hand for 5 hours - Pushing for 6 hours - Reaching above shoulder - Use of fingers - Both hands required - Walking 6 hours - Standing for 6 hours - Crawling for 1 hour - Kneeling for 1 hour - Repeated bending for 1 hour - Climbing - legs only for 1 hour - Both legs required - Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously - Near vision at 13 to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4 - Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other - Both eyes required - Depth perception - Ability to distinguish basic colors - Ability to distinguish shades of colors - Hearing (aid may be permitted).

Duties

  • The Physiatrist (under the guidance and direction of the Chief of PM&R) will oversee and collaborate to ensure that all applicable clinical functions - as assigned by Chief of PM&Rs are completed timely and optimally
  • Service responsibilities include but are not limited to: Manage our TBI/Polytrauma Program
  • Evaluation and management of general PM&R outpatients - spine clinic and EMGs
  • Provides cross cover for our inpatient rehab unit while the primary attending physician is leave
  • Weekend call coverage for CIIRP inpatient unit
  • PM&R Resident and student teaching Execute clinical and non-clinical assignment efficiently - timely and courteous service to all veterans seeking rehabilitative care - and make clinical notes readily available to the referring practitioners
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
