Design the Future of Army Infrastructure:

Are you a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer with a passion for high-performance building systems, HVAC design, and construction oversight?

The United States Army Garrison (USAG) Alaska is seeking a talented engineer to join the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Wainwright. In this role, you will be the technical authority for mechanical and utility systems, leading the design, coordination, and execution of complex facility projects.

This is an incredible opportunity to leverage your private sector design experience (MEP, HVAC, plumbing) into a stable, high-impact federal career supporting the Army’s mission in one of the most unique and critical environments in the world.

The Army Civilian Advantage:

Working as a Department of the Army Civilian offers unparalleled benefits that go far beyond standard commercial packages:

  • Total Compensation: A highly competitive salary ($92K - $134K) plus a 1.49% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
  • Rock-Solid Benefits: Enjoy a secure federal pension (FERS), matching Thrift Savings Plan (401k equivalent), comprehensive health/life insurance, and generous paid time off.
  • Relocation Support: Relocation expenses may be reimbursed for highly qualified candidates!
  • Flexibility: Telework is eligible (as determined by agency policy).

What You Will Do:

As a key member of the Technical Engineering Branch, you will:

  • Design & Layout: Apply complex mechanical engineering principles to design HVAC systems, plumbing, and a variety of other mechanical systems for military facilities.
  • Project Leadership: Prepare scopes of work, design drawings, engineering calculations, and specifications for new construction, modernization, and repair projects.
  • Quality Assurance: Review contractor submittals (shop drawings, product data) for technical accuracy and compliance with military and industry standards.
  • Field Engineering: Evaluate site conditions, conduct field surveillance to assess contractor performance, and serve as the final on-site technical authority for specialty mechanical projects.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, OR a combination of education and experience (e.g., PE License, EIT/FE exam, or specified coursework).
  • Experience: At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 (for the GS-11 level) or GS-11 (for the GS-12 level) equivalent. This includes experience reviewing contractor submittals, performing field observations, evaluating design documents, and preparing scopes of work/specifications for mechanical systems.

Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, possess a valid Driver's License, and be able to pass a background investigation.

(Note: This is a developmental position with promotion potential to the GS-12 level).
